New York – Doctors are warning of the potential health effects of energy drinks. As reported by Reuters, researchers express their concern regarding the possible effects and potential benefits of federal regulation of their use in the November publication of the Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

Lead researcher, Dr. John Higgins of The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, is quoted as stating to Reuters Health about energy drinks, “What we know is that a typical energy drink can have as much as a quarter cup of sugar, and more caffeine than a strong cup of coffee.” Ingredients in these drinks can reportedly affect blood pressure, mental states, and lead to other health complications.

The American Beverage Association is further quoted as releasing the statement in response to the research, “What we need to remember is the importance of consuming all foods and beverages in moderation… Most mainstream energy drinks actually contain about half the caffeine of a similar size cup of coffeehouse coffee.”
