Covington, Louisiana (WiredPRNews.com) – The oil spill resulting from the Deepwater Horizon explosion on April 20 has reportedly reached the mark of becoming the worst in U.S. history. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), estimates show that the massive spill has exceeded the Exxon Valdez spill of 1989, which was previously regarded as the nation’s worst.

As noted by the AP, attempts to stop the spill utilizing a procedure regarded as “top kill” got underway on Wednesday after several failed efforts by BP to stop the spill, which some estimates suggest has leaked as much as 19 million gallons of oil over the course of five weeks.

Jeremy Symons, vice president of the National Wildlife Federation, is quoted in the report as stating of the spill, “Now we know the true scale of the monster we are fighting in the Gulf… BP has unleashed an unstoppable force of appalling proportions.”
