U.S. – A new study suggests that working long hours can lead to safety issues for surgeons and their patients. As reported by HealthDay News, researchers found that extended hours of work can increase the risks of depression and other personal problems for surgeons and present safety issues for patients.

Study author Dr. Charles M. Balch, a professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, is quoted in the report as stating of the findings in a news release, “There's a strong correlation between workload and distress, which comes out in the personal and professional lives of surgeons.”

Balch however further asserts, “While there is evidence that burnout can lead to problems, there is no evidence that reducing hours would make all doctors more satisfied or lead to better patient care… If hours were regulated, the reality is that people would have to punch time clocks, and I don't think surgeons necessarily want their workload monitored.”

More information about the research may be found in the November publication of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
